Example Holiday Itinerary - South Africa

Please note this is only an example holiday itinerary for South Africa and was calculated and based on prices in 2007.

Two itinerary options are proposed, both starting at Cape Town and ending in Durban and taking in establishments in the Western Cape, Eastern Camp and Kwa-Zulu Natal that I know and have visited or which have been visited by our agent or her staff recently.

The two itineraries diverge on Day 12, Wednesday 14 February, 2007.

In Option 1 on that day you continue east to Grahamstown for a few days and then drive to East London airport for a short flight to Durban where you collect another hire car to drive to the Battlefields area of Kwa-Zulu Natal.  The holiday finishes at a highly recommended mountain inn, in the Drakensberg, before driving back to Durban to catch a flight to Johannesburg and on to London or Bristol.

Option 2 takes you north to Graaff Reinet on 14 February, then Grahamstown and East London airport to fly to Durban as in Option 1.   From Durban it is suggested you might like to consider stopping off at a guesthouse halfway to the Drakensberg [run by young friends of ours] which has its own attractions described on page 11.  From there you carry on to the same mountain inn before returning to Durban for the flights home.  This does not include Fugitive's Drift in the Natal battlefields, which makes it that much cheaper.

Both options carry the tag ‘a’.   This is because there is the possibility of organising a variant to both which would include a visit to the English pioneer area of Bathurst [the Pig and Whistle is reputed to be the oldest pub in the Eastern Cape] between Grahamstown and Port Alfred, guided by a friend, who may in turn may be able to offer alternative accommodation at his home or with other friends.  That would take a day and night out of the existing options, which would need to be adjusted accordingly.

Neither of these itinerary proposals is set in stone.  Indeed, we expect them to be the subject of more discussion.  They cover the ground you are most likely to want to see and give an accurate assessment of likely cost of the final choice.

Prices are held for some months ahead.  We think Fugitives Drift [Option 1] may raise prices in October this year and Mulberry Guesthouse [Option 2] in December, which should not cause a problem as you will probably have confirmed bookings before then.

You will want to work out which is the better price for the internal flights between East London and Durban and between Durban and Johannesburg.  The prices we can obtain for you by buying them in South Africa are quoted.  They will probably be more expensive then buying them as part of a package with the international airfares - but may not be.

How much cash to take?   About £500 each.   Cards are acceptable.
