Garden Route Golf
Combine golfing, whale watching and the garden route. The area has two national parks, two nature reserves and botanical gardens, plus ostrich farms. Start at Cape Town, George or Port Elizabeth and go on to a fabulous safari.
This is hard to beat. For golfers, South Africa's
golf courses offer probably the best value golfing
in the world: finely sculptured courses - several
designed by international pros.- in spectacular
scenery at affordable prices under cloudless skies,
with safari options half a day away, or less. In
all honesty, where can you beat this
combination?
The Garden Route runs from Mossel Bay in the
Western Cape to Storms River in the Eastern Cape
but classic golf courses are aplenty in and around
Cape Town - 25 at our latest count. One of the
oldest has hosted the South African Open many
times: the stately Royal Cape in Wynberg, Cape
Town's leafy suburb. All of them are of
championship status.
Along the Garden Route 14 championship courses
invite the golfer to sample the mild climate and
spectacular coastal scenery as a backdrop to their
swings and chips, like the Pinnacle Point course atop
the cliffs near Mossel Bay. Further east the town of
George has four courses designed by world class
international Gary Player, the most well known and
stunning of which is The Links. It has marshland and
walks between trees and fairways flanked by sand
dunes and lakes.
Beyond the official end of the Garden Route in the
Eastern Cape another 15 courses, most near the coast,
beckon the overseas golfer with wonderful wild
scenery, beautiful greens and plenty of caddies.
Several safari camps are within an easy drive away.
And beyond the Eastern Cape courses are another
30 courses in Kwazulu-Natal, quite a few of them
among the sweeping vistas of the mountainous
Drakensberg crags, many others near the coast.
Inland, around Johannesburg and Pretoria and in
the Province of Gauteng, and throughout the rest of
the country, there are another 82 first class courses
to choose from.
