Africa Wildlife Safari with King & King: In Africa since 1927

Doug King (wearing the slouch hat, right) went to Rhodesia in 1927 where he learned much of his bush craft, bringing law and order to remote corners of Africa as a mounted member of the British South Africa Police. After WWII, during which he served with the Long Range Desert Group and Special Operations Executive, the government offered him 15 000 acres of virgin bush at 3 pence an acre, which he named Chinyika after its seasonal river.

Managing Partner, Don King (smoking the pipe, right), known by many as 'DK', flew out to Africa in a double decker BOAC flying boat as a 16-year-old schoolboy in 1949. He spent the first years of his adult life working on Doug King's Chinyika Ranch, which introduced him to Africa's abundant and diverse wild life, armed poachers and white cattle rustlers. As a professional wildlife writer he specialized on drawing the world's attention to the plight of endangered species, one of which, the black rhino, was introduced to Chinyika by Doug King's son, Ken. DK is still writing personal wild life notes for every client who goes out to Africa. Of many unusual experiences in Africa, DK remembers sharing the back of a single engine aircraft with an orphaned baby elephant as the most unnerving; "The drugs wore off early and the elephant was not in a crate.''.

Ken King has been charged by black rhino but does not make a habit of it. They sound like a steam express train and stop for nothing. The conservancy developed by Ken and others in the area now hosts more than 60 black rhino. Ken's experiences with black rhino are worth a book. K&K guests can participate in tracking these monsters of the bush. Ken and wife Sandy host K&K guests at their charming thatched safari accommodation at Dingaans's Camp. Sandy's meals are legendary with impala liver an option on every breakfast menu.

''Come back from Africa refreshed in body and mind. It's a tonic for the soul.''
